Metal Building Erection Labor Cost per Square Foot in Texas (2026)

Short answer: published 2026 guides put the labor to erect a pre-engineered metal building at about $5–$10 per square foot (BuildingsGuide, October 2026), $6–$12 for standard structures (Terrapin Construction Group, April 2026) and $5–$15 (Worldwide Steel Buildings, April 2026). That covers standing the frame and hanging the roof and wall panels on a finished foundation. It does not include the steel package, the foundation, site work, doors beyond the basics, insulation or anything inside the building.

What "Erection" Covers, and What It Does Not

Erection is the field labor and equipment to assemble the building the manufacturer shipped: setting columns on the anchor bolts, raising the rafters, installing purlins, girts and bracing, plumbing and squaring the frame, then installing roof and wall panels, trim and the openings framed into the design. Equipment such as lifts and a crane is part of the job, and some erectors price it separately.

It does not include the building package itself, which BuildingsGuide puts at $15–$25 per square foot for a 10-foot eave and Terrapin at $14–$22. It does not include the foundation: BuildingsGuide allows $4–$8 per square foot for a slab and Terrapin $4–$10 depending on soil. Read every erection quote for what is excluded, especially equipment, insulation installation, overhead doors and trim around openings.

The Published 2026 Ranges, Side by Side

BuildingsGuide: $5–$10 per sq ft. "As a guide, you should allow $5 to $10 per square foot for construction," on its metal building prices page, last updated October 2026. BuildingsGuide matches buyers with suppliers.

Terrapin Construction Group: $6–$12 per sq ft. "Erection labor runs $6 to $12 per square foot for standard structures in 2026" (April 2026). Terrapin is a design-build contractor.

Worldwide Steel Buildings: $5–$15 per sq ft. From its April 2026 guide to the cost of erecting a metal building. Worldwide Steel Buildings manufactures and sells buildings.

All three sell buildings or construction or are paid by those who do, and none is Texas-specific. Read them as published ranges, not benchmarks. The overlap, roughly $6 to $10 per square foot, is where a standard building on a ready slab tends to sit; the spread around it is the site, the building and the market.

What Erection Labor Comes to by Building Size

Applying BuildingsGuide's $5–$10 range: a 30x40 (1,200 sq ft) is about $6,000–$12,000 to erect, a 40x60 (2,400 sq ft) about $12,000–$24,000, and a 50x100 (5,000 sq ft) about $25,000–$50,000. At Terrapin's $6–$12 the same three are $7,200–$14,400, $14,400–$28,800 and $30,000–$60,000. That is arithmetic on published ranges, not a quote.

For the 30x40, our own planning matches: in UTS BuildPros planning ranges as of October 2026, delivery and erection labor for a 30x40 in Texas runs about $6,000–$12,000. The rest of that building's cost is broken out line by line in our Texas metal building cost guide, and the full kit, shell and finished figures for each size are in what a 30x40, 40x60 and 50x100 costs.

What Texas Ironworkers Earn

Erection is ironworker labor, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes wages for it. In the May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, structural iron and steel workers in Texas earned a mean of $27.28 an hour ($56,740 a year) and a median of $25.12, with about 9,700 employed in the state. The national mean was $33.79 an hour. Those are wages, not a contractor's billing rate: an erector's price also carries payroll taxes, workers' compensation, insurance, equipment, travel, supervision and margin.

The wage gap is one reason national per-square-foot guides should be read with care in Texas. BuildingsGuide notes that "labor rates can fluctuate by as much as 60% depending on where in the country you intend to build."

What Moves the Erection Price

Size. Mobilization, equipment delivery and setup cost about the same for a small building as a large one, so small buildings land toward the top of each range per square foot.

Height and span. Taller eaves and wider clear spans mean heavier members, bigger lifts or a crane, and more time at height.

Openings and accessories. Every framed opening, overhead door, canopy, mezzanine or lean-to adds labor beyond the basic shell.

Panel system. Standing seam roof systems take more installation care than through-fastened panels, and manufacturers set installation requirements for their weathertightness warranties.

Site access and distance. A tight urban lot, soft ground after rain or a remote site hours from the erector's yard all add time and travel. A slab that is out of level or anchor bolts set off the drawings cost more than any line on the quote, because the frame cannot go up until they are fixed.

Wind and weather. Panels and long members cannot be lifted safely in high wind, and Texas summer heat shortens productive hours.

How Long Erection Takes

Erection itself is usually the short part of the schedule. BuildingsGuide says a 40x60 "can be erected in 2 to 3 days" and that larger commercial projects "typically take 2 to 4 weeks," within an overall 6- to 12-week timeline that includes fabrication. Permits, engineering, steel lead time and the foundation usually take longer than putting the building up.

Getting a Comparable Erection Price

Ask each erector or contractor to price the same drawings and say, in writing, whether the price includes equipment, unloading, insulation installation, door and window installation, trim, cleanup and permits, and what happens if the slab or anchor bolts are out of tolerance. A low per-square-foot number with those items excluded is not a low price.

Common Questions

Questions About Metal Buildings

How much does metal building erection labor cost per square foot in 2026?
Published 2026 guides put it at about $5–$10 per sq ft (BuildingsGuide, October 2026), $6–$12 for standard structures (Terrapin Construction Group, April 2026) and $5–$15 (Worldwide Steel Buildings, April 2026). That is labor and equipment to erect the frame and panels on a finished foundation, not the steel package or the slab.
How much does it cost to erect a 40x60 metal building?
A 40x60 is 2,400 sq ft, so at BuildingsGuide's $5–$10 per sq ft erection is about $12,000–$24,000, and at Terrapin's $6–$12 about $14,400–$28,800. That excludes the building package, foundation, site work, insulation and interior. BuildingsGuide says a 40x60 can be erected in 2 to 3 days once the slab is ready.
What do structural steel workers earn in Texas?
In BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for May 2025, structural iron and steel workers in Texas earned a mean of $27.28 an hour ($56,740 a year) and a median of $25.12 an hour; the national mean was $33.79. A contractor's erection price also covers taxes, insurance, equipment, supervision and margin, so it is well above the wage.
Does a metal building erection price include the foundation?
No. The foundation is a separate line: BuildingsGuide allows $4–$8 per sq ft for a concrete slab and Terrapin $4–$10 depending on soil. North Texas expansive clay can require a post-tensioned slab or piers designed from a geotechnical report, which costs more.
Why do erection quotes for the same building differ?
Exclusions and site conditions. Some erectors include equipment, unloading, insulation installation, doors and trim; others price them separately. Eave height, span, openings, panel system, site access, distance and weather all change the labor. Ask every bidder to price the same drawings and list exclusions in writing.
